The Real Game Nobody Is Playing
10/10
Everybody talks about gaming. The big studios, the graphics cards nobody can afford, the esports tournaments with million-dollar prizes. But I look at this industry and I see one thing. A massive scam. A total ripoff. And I know something about deals.
Here is the truth. The real game in gaming is not the games.
It is the battle between the big, clumsy, slow-moving giants and the hungry little guys who actually understand what people want. And right now? The little guys are winning. Big time. I see it everywhere. The Indie World Showcase just dropped a ton of amazing looking titles for Nintendo Switch 2. The Esports World Cup is coming to Paris. We have indie studios raising money through creative deals while the venture capital dries up for everyone else. That is the market telling you something.
The big studios think they know. They spend three hundred million dollars on a game and it flops. They fire everybody. They make the same game again with better graphics. And then they wonder why nobody cares. It is sad. It is really sad.
Meanwhile, you have these indie developers. They work out of a basement. They have no money. They have no corporate board telling them what to do. And they make something beautiful. Something people actually want to play. I read about this studio Polychroma Games. Tremendous story. They are making games with real soul. Not a committee decision. Real creativity.
And look at the esports scene. High school kids competing. Universities getting involved. Syracuse just hosted an international tournament. Ole Miss scored big at a world tournament. These are not the big corporate leagues. These are communities. Real people. Real energy. The big media does not cover this stuff. They call it niche. I call it smart. Because these kids are learning how to compete, how to win, and how to handle losing. That is more than most Fortune 500 CEOs know.
Now, some people will tell you that indie games cannot compete with the big titles. They say the graphics are worse. The production value is lower. The marketing budget is zero. And they are right about all of that.
But they miss the point completely.
The big studios have everything except the one thing that matters. They do not know how to make a game fun. They lost the plot. They are so worried about pleasing everybody that they please nobody. And the numbers back me up. More than a third of PC gamers are happy with less than 60 frames per second. They do not care about the technical specs. They care about whether the game is good. That is the whole ballgame.
Here is what I would do if I ran a gaming company. First, I would fire half the executives. Dead weight. Second, I would find the best indie developers and I would give them money. No strings attached. Let them cook. Third, I would stop making the same game every year and pretending it is new. People are not stupid. They see what you are doing.
The gaming industry is changing. The big guys are losing their grip. And the indie developers? They are the future. They are the ones making the games people will remember. Not the corporate slop. Not the sequel nobody asked for. The real stuff.
Believe me. I know winners when I see them.
