I spent last weekend playing a game that fits on a floppy disk. No updates. No battle pass. No 50-gig install. And you know what? It was more fun than anything I’ve played all year. Here’s the uncomfortable truth: modern game development has become cargo cult complexity. We’ve added so many layers – procedural generation, ray tracing, 400-person teams, live-service roadmaps – that we forgot what made games fun in the first place. The retro revival isn’t nostalgia. It’s a diagnosis. What retro games do that modern ones don’t: The three key differences that actually matter: 1. Constraints forced creativity. When you have 64KB, you can’t waste a single byte. Every sprite, every sound effect, every line of code has to earn its place. Modern devs have infinite resources and zero editorial discipline. They add features because they can, not because they should. 2. The game was the fun. Old games had one job: be satisfying to play for 30 seconds. That’s it. If the jump didn’t feel right, you fixed it. Today we design monetization systems before the jump feels good. 3. Players didn’t need tutorials. A 1985 manual told you the buttons. That’s all. The game taught itself through play. Modern games have hour-long intro sequences because the core loop isn’t intuitive enough to stand alone. I’m not saying every modern game is garbage. Elden Ring gets it. Celeste gets it. Hades gets it. They’re built like retro games – tight core loops, limited movesets, everything serves the fun. They just happen to have better graphics. The indie scene has already figured this out. Look at indie-game-evolution: Hollow Knight, Stardew Valley, Baba Is You. All made by small teams, all with retro DNA, all outselling AAA productions per dollar spent. That’s the retrogames-in-modern-dev lesson: you can build a masterpiece with zero polygons and one designer. My recommendation for any developer who actually wants to make fun games: Pick three classic games – Super Mario 3, Castlevania, Doom – and play them until you can beat them without dying. Then ask yourself: what can I remove from my current project? What feature adds complexity but not joy? What would this game look like if it had to run on a 1990 console? Then prototype that version. In a week. Not a year. The worst thing modern devs do is believe that more is better. The best thing retro revival can teach us is that classics-meet-contemporary means taking the discipline of 1985 and applying it to today’s tools. Use Unreal Engine to make a game that feels like it could run on an NES. You’ll ship faster, have better reviews, and actually enjoy making games again. Or keep chasing the live-service dragon.
