I've Played 500 Indie Games This Year — Here Are The 5 You're Sleeping On
8/10
I found out the hard way that most "hidden gem" lists are garbage.
Last year I spent $2,000 on indie games nobody talks about. 80% of them were boring. Another 15% were fine but forgettable. But the remaining 5%? Those changed how I think about game design.
Here's the thing about indie games right now. The market is flooded. Steam drops 50+ new games every single day. Most reviewers play for 2 hours and call it a day. They miss the games that take 30 minutes to click.
So I did something different. I played every single one of these for at least 10 hours. I finished them. I replayed them. I broke them.
Here's my comparison of the 5 games that actually deserve your time.
The key differences that matter
Hollow Plane does something I've never seen — it forces you to draw your own map. No in-game markers. No quest arrows. You actually need paper and pen. Sounds annoying. It's the most immersive thing I've played in years. The map becomes yours.
The Last Grocer flips horror upside down. You're a night shift worker at a 24-hour store. The horror comes from customers. Not monsters. Not jump scares. Just increasingly wrong people walking in at 3 AM. I had to stop playing at midnight because I got too paranoid.
Echoes of a Fading World is the only game on this list that made me cry. You play as a librarian in the last city before the world ends. You don't save anyone. You just document their stories. It's devastating. It's beautiful. It's 4 hours long and I'll never forget it.
Rusted Protocol is for people who miss old-school puzzle games. No tutorials. No hints. Just you and a broken machine you have to fix. I spent 45 minutes stuck on one puzzle. When I solved it I literally stood up and cheered.
Between Bells is the hardest platformer I've ever played. Harder than Celeste. Harder than Super Meat Boy. The movement is slippery on purpose. Every death is your fault. The music changes based on how many times you've died. At 100 deaths it gets sad. At 500 it gets angry. I hit 300 and had to walk away.
My recommendation
If you only buy one game from this list: get Hollow Plane. It's $15 and will give you 30-40 hours of genuine discovery.
If you want something short and emotional: Echoes of a Fading World. Play it in one sitting on a rainy Sunday.
If you hate yourself: Between Bells. You've been warned.
The truth is most indie-game-reviews miss what makes these special. They're not about graphics or polish. They're about one person's weird vision executed perfectly. These 5 games have that. Most don't.
Go find your own hidden-gems. But start here.
